THE NIGHT WATCHMAN: Louise Erdrich

THE NIGHT WATCHMAN

by Louise Erdrich

Whenever Louise Erdrich releases a new novel, I always drop whatever else I happen to be reading in order to to start it. The National Book Award-winner’s latest novel The Night Watchman is set in the winter of 1953 in rural North Dakota. Its main protagonist, Thomas Wazhashk, is based on Erdrich's grandfather, who also worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native American dispossession from his small Chippewa community to Washington DC. Like all Erdrich's novels it is a totally engrossing read, with a cast of vivid characters and a whole lot of heart.
