January by Conspiracy 365
ISBN: 9781741690330
Callum Ormond's dad just died from a mystery illness, leaving him to look after his mum and little sister, Gabby. But his dad knew something, something serious, about their family, which could totally change everything! If only he could work out what the drawings his dad left behind meant! And quickly, before the cops get him, and before his uncle, who's been acting totally weird, takes over. This book is THE next big thing. A book a month is being released in 2010. Action-packed, fast-paced, GREAT for boys that aren't easily scared. Review by Jessica

Notwithstanding by Louis De Bernieres
ISBN: 9781846553318
Notwithstanding, a charming town in southern England, is full of quirky types: the General who shops without his trousers; Mrs Mac who is constantly accompanied by the ghost of her dead husband; and a silent spider who encourages romances, just to name a few. At times I laughed out loud, and during at least one story I was inconsolably sobbing. It just seemed so real. These are short stories to dip into time and time again. Review by Jessica

The Women in Black by Madeleine St.John
ISBN: 9781921520204
Spanning one hot summer in Sydney during the late fifties, The Women in Black is comedy of manners set in the 'Ladies Frocks' section of Goode's Department Store. I loved this novel for St John's creation of four complex and tremendously funny women, each of whom is quietly navigating a personal crisis and for the way she evokes life in Sydney in the fifties – so rich and detailed are her descriptions that Sydney emerges like a fifth character. A complete pleasure to read! Review by Andrea

Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother by Xinran
ISBN: 9780701184032
Xinran, a female journalist in China, discovers and follows the stories of various Chinese women that have had to abandon or kill their baby daughters, and then the stories of daughters who've been abandoned.
This book filled me with disbelief, wonder, loss and exhaustion, but more than anything else: love. The stories within are born from tragic oppression, but all reveal the intrinsic love between mothers and daughters. Heartbreakingly so.
Powerful and sad, this book is an amazing read. Read this if you are or you have a mother. You just must. Review by Jessica

Beautiful Bodies by Gerald Stone
ISBN: 9781405039468
In 1833 a convict ship, the Amphitrite, carrying 102 female prisoners bound for Australia ran aground off the French coast. Not one of the women survived. Their names were never released.
This book reads like a thriller, informs like historical non-fiction and tells such a dramatic tale. All based on a true story, Gerald Stone (Who Killed Channel 9?) has immaculately researched and clearly fallen in love with the Amphitrite, and his writing style encourages you to do the same. Once I'd begun, I couldn't put it down, and I felt like I knew these strong, poor, cursed women. It's a sad but beautifully written tale that will stay with you for a long time. Review by Jessica

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
ISBN: 9780575089365
Vampires are so in right now, and on that note let me introduce you to True Blood, the latest in the batch of blood sucking tales. In these books vampires have gained equal rights and are out in the world at large. At the center of this tale is Sookie Stackhouse, the mind reading southern belle whose love life is lacking until she meets the sexy and mysterious vampire Bill, whose thoughts are impenetrable to her. Trying to piece together the murders plaguing her town, Sookie tries to use her girft (or curse) to find the culprit who has a penchant for killing girls who fraternise with vampires. Great escapism, similar to Twilight, but naughtier. This is definitely not one for the kids. Review by Suzy

Chronicles: v. 1 by Bob Dylan
ISBN: 9780743478649
Bob Dylan's autobiography is one of the best I have ever read, and not because he exposes all his dirty secrets, my usual perquisite in a celebrity tell all, but because it so so well written, so funny and poetic. Just as in life and in his music, Dylan retains his mystery. He gives the reader a beautifully fragmented self portrait, that both reinforces and undermines his iconic image, which for a Dylan fan like me, makes him all the more fascinating. Review by Suzy
